Florence, South Carolina was founded on:
"Roundhouse" is the popular term for a building used to store, repair, inspect, and shelter, steam locomotives. Florence was home to one of the first roundhouses in the Southeast. Early roundhouses were often called "stables" with the spaces for storing locomotives called "stalls". Often they were square or octagon-shaped. However, railway companies preferred the near-circular building style because of the abundance of natural light from both ends of the structure and the ease of expanding the building when necessary. In the center was a rotating turntable that would move an incoming locomotive into an available bay. Florence became a major railroad center based on the fact that it had a roundhouse. Today we pay tribute to our beginnings as a city by making "our Roundhouse" the center of good food, good times, and great friends. Enjoy!!
